May in the San Gabriel Valley brings heavier dish loads, outdoor cooking, and guest visits—all of which push more grease and debris into drain lines that may still carry buildup from winter. When a drain slows down, homeowners often wonder: is snaking enough, or do I need hydro jetting?
Drain Doctor Plumbing & Rooter has cleared drains across Covina, West Covina, Glendora, and Walnut since 1996. Here is a straightforward guide to how we choose the right method.
Start with snaking for most clogs
Mechanical snaking and rooter service punch a hole through a clog so water can flow again. For a single slow drain where the pipe is in decent shape, snaking is usually the right first step. It is fast, effective, and gets your house working again.
Snaking addresses the blockage in the middle of the pipe. It does not always remove grease and scale clinging to the walls—the material that causes the next clog.
Add camera inspection when clogs repeat
If the same line clogs twice in one season, or if multiple fixtures are affected, we recommend drain camera inspection during the same visit. Video shows the pipe interior: buildup, roots, bellies, cracks, and joint failures that snaking alone cannot fix.
Camera inspection also tells us whether the pipe is safe for hydro jetting.
When hydro jetting is the right tool
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scrub grease, soap, and scale off pipe walls. We recommend it when:
- Inspection shows heavy buildup on pipe walls
- Kitchen lines clog repeatedly after cooking-heavy periods
- Scale or corrosion narrows the pipe diameter
Jetting is not appropriate for every pipe. Fragile cast iron, collapsed sections, and failed joints can be damaged by high pressure. We inspect first and only jet when the pipe can handle it.
When repair is the honest answer
Sometimes camera footage shows structural damage—cracks, collapses, or major root intrusion—that clearing and jetting cannot fix long-term. In those cases we discuss sewer line repair, pipe lining, or trenchless repair. We provide upfront pricing on every option.
What to tell us when you call
Let us know which fixtures are affected, whether the clog has happened before, and whether you have used chemical drain products recently. That helps us arrive with the right equipment.
