What a French drain is meant to do
A French drain intercepts water in the soil or along a low area and carries it to a safe discharge point: a storm connection where allowed, a dry well, a lower portion of the lot, or another approved outlet. It is not a substitute for a clogged sewer lateral, and it is not a guarantee that every patio puddle will disappear. The goal is a defined path so water stops pooling against the house.
Homes in West Covina, Walnut, and Glendora often see this after a patio pour, a grade change, or landscaping that redirected runoff. If water is entering through a floor drain or showing up as sewage, that is a different system. Indoor backups route through drain clearing and camera inspection first.
